With its stunning mountain peaks, fairytale villages and beautiful hotels & chalets, there’s no shortage of ways to fall in love with Salzburger Land. But if you’ve got romance in mind, check into Romantik Hotel GMACHL – a proud member of Historic Hotels of Europe!
Anyone that reads my blog regularly will know I’m a huge fan of intimate hotels with breathtaking pools and award-winning gourmet restaurants. So let me tell you about my long weekend stay at this 4-star superior hotel – the oldest family run business in Austria! Romantic candle light dinners, tucked-away tables for two, and spa pampering for couples … need I say more?
In operation since 1334, and now managed by the 23rd generation of the family – by Michaela Hirnböck-Gmachl & Fritz Hirnböck – this gem of a hotel is located in an idyllic village setting only 5 km from the Old City of Salzburg.
Romantic Dreams
The hotel brims with personality, as it is not within one structure, but instead made up of several buildings: HISTORIC and NEW. You choose which part suits you best! The hotel features 73 luxurious rooms and suites decorated in warm tones with modern and traditional style furnishings.

GOOD TO KNOW: Can’t imagine leaving your dog behind while you go on vacation? Romantik Hotel GMACHL is a pet-friendly hotel. Ask for a SUITE in the new building “Klosterhof” with direct access to the garden, and your best friend will thank you for it.

Wellness & SPA
The initial thing that hits you about the indoor pool is the amazing view. Spread out over 1,500 sq m, the panoramic Horizon SPA overlooks Salzburg – could one ask for more?
There’s the indoor swimming pool with a fireplace, an outdoor swimming pool with sunbathing area (open May to September), a Finnish Sauna, a Salt Steam Bath, Infrared Area, a Relaxation Area, and a Tea & Coffee Bar with hot beverages. Last but not least, you can indulge in heavenly Face & Body Treatments.

INSIDER TIP: Be sure to test the “Wundervoll” GMACHL product line, your skin will adore it! Opt for the Lady’s Beauty Package and Men’s Relax Package – 135 minutes/195 Euro each.
Delicious Eats
Well, foodies will love this restaurant, the breakfast here is fantastic! The home-made jams are incredible tasty, and even if you’re on diet – you won’t be able to resist them. Don’t miss the Apricot-Marzipan Jam, a pure delight…
WHAT WE LOVED: Attention to detail is paramount! The hotel is aimed at those with an eye for romantic design and it delivers.

When it comes to dinner, you’ll enjoy the award-winning cuisine and exquisite wines. Restaurant GMACHL is well-known for its international cuisine, and offers a wide variety of culinary delights. Drawing on traditional recipes and their exceptional finesses, the imaginative chefs create superb dishes made from fresh, regional products all year round.

Wining & Champagning
And there is the cozy BAR where you can warm up in front of the fireplace on a chilly winter evening. It goes without saying that a glass of Cognac just makes for a perfect digestive after a full meal. And be sure to try the Fernet-Branca and Averna – the Italian cure for overeating, you’ll need it!

To Dos While You’Re Here
When the snow falls, the temperatures drop and the chill sets in, you will be tempted not to leave the grounds.

But when the sun comes out, go explore Salzburg and MOZART’S birthplace – a veritable living museum! And the stunning Salzburg Lake District “Salzburger Seenland” with its majestic mountains and misty lakes is a MUST. Check out Fuschl See and Attersee, both look like a fairytale during winter. And once you arrive at Hallstatt, you’ll think it’s just an illusion.

Big shout out to Hirnböck-Gmachl family for the high standard of service, and thoughtful hotel design! Opinions are, as always, my own.
