Knowing where to go in autumn can really make or break your trip. There are some fantastic places to visit year round, but in order to make the most of autumn you really need to know where to go to capture that colorful autumn magic. For that reason Bad Hofgastein should be on your list of places to explore!
The Gastein Valley is soaked in tumultuous history, and it’s a special place to revive and heal your body and soul. During the Middle Ages, an incredible amount of gold was discovered on the site of Radhausberg Böckstein. At that time Gastein was known as the Golden Chamber of Europe. In 1940 they came up with the idea of digging a shaft into the Radhausberg with the hope of reaching even greater gold deposits. However, the gold seekers were disappointed, because there was no gold. The lack of gold was due to the fact that thermal waters had dissolved all of the ore inside the mountain over the course of countless centuries. Nowadays, there are lots of fine fissures and clefts left, through which the radon water vapors rise from the water table deep below into the gallery – it’s a unique place of natural healing.
What about where to stay once you are here? Well, when you’re looking for a peaceful retreat that is secluded and offers you a memorable experience, look no further – Hotel Zum Stern is the place to check into! Clearly, there’s no shortage of beautiful hotels in the area, but what sets the 4-star superior hotel apart is its fantastic location, and awesome views of the Alps.
In short, the surroundings are as postcard perfect as a film set. Zum Stern is the kind of hotel where you can enter feeling stressed, and leave a few days later feeling more relaxed, younger even, than you have in years.
The rooms and suites all feature a furnished private balcony or terrace. They’re decorated in a calming neutral palette with lovely bursts of soothing browns, reds and greys throughout. You can choose between several types of accommodation – the traditional country-house style or the NEW ones with wooden floors.
Each of the new rooms and suites comes with all the comforts you would need in a home away from home, from heavenly beds, noble wood to a spacious bathroom with a modern walk-in shower, providing a sanctuary of calm you can retreat to after a day of swimming or hiking.
Aside from that, Zum Stern will stop at nothing to make sure you have everything you need to enjoy the quiet oasis of the rooms and suites. Moreover, you’ll have to pinch yourself daily to know is real life as you wake up to these views!
If you’re a big family, ask for connecting rooms – kids will enjoy a movie on the second plasma TV screen, and mum & dad can relax into their well-deserved break.
The breakfast, the lunch snack and the dinner are impressive adventures here! The menu is a fusion of traditional Austrian and international dishes. Expect yummy fish and mouth-watering veal, French onion soup to delicious grilled shrimps.
Beyond the great food, the staff at the hotel is beyond welcoming and genuinely kind. The General Manager – Claudia Wachter-Tschikof – will charm you with her broad and deep knowledge of history and wellness tradition in the area.
GOOD TO KNOW: The restaurant boasts a dedicated area for guests with dogs – isn’t that great? You won’t have to leave your four-legged friend in the room while you enjoy the Gala Dinner.

The on-site spa is frequented by seasoned retreat-goers, with a beautiful indoor pool, and the inviting Sternenreich area. Here you can enjoy a Tepidarium, a Bio Sauna with fresh mountain herbs, an Infrared Sauna, a Finnish Sauna (90 °C), an Ice Grotto, a Salt Grotto, cozy water beds and a Kneipp basin. To Dos While You’Re Here
Outside of the hotel there’s an endless supply of day walks, hiking trails, so be sure to allow plenty of time to venture beyond the wellness hotel during the day. Best part? The Gastein Healing Cave is located about 12 km from the hotel. And it goes without saying that the radon tunnel is unique in the world – a healing oasis for musculoskeletal diseases (spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, chronic gout, psoriatic arthritis, spinal syndromes, rheumatism, fibromyalgia syndrome, osteoporosis pain, polyneuropathy, and so on), respiratory diseases (chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, chronic sinusitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hay fever), and skin disorders like psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, delayed wound healing or scleroderma.
Please be advised that children are not allowed in the radon tunnel. Here you can find more information about the Gasteiner Heilstollen.
Last but not least, you can’t miss the opportunity to spend some lazy hours in Alpentherme Gastein – a sanctuary of complete relaxation.
In addition, Hotel Zum Stern is located less than 5 minutes away from the Golf Club Gastein – the 18-hole golf course in the middle of Hohe Tauern National Park offers a unique golfing experience.
And if you love to hike, head to Stubnerkogel! There are three ways to get up to the top of Stubnerkogel. Either you hike, go by cable car, or go by both cable car and walk for a while.
So this is what a vacation at Hotel Zum Stern is all about: relaxing, breathing and healing in sublime surroundings.
A very warm thank you to Hotel Zum Stern for welcoming us to visit Bad Hofgastein, and discover this little hidden paradise! Opinions are, as always, my own.
